🎥 ASL Video Script: How to File an ADA Complaint 

Hello! This video explains how Deaf and Hard of Hearing people can file a complaint under the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. If you were denied access—like not getting an interpreter—you have rights. 

Step 1: Who Are You Filing Against? 
There are two types: 

• Title II – Government services (like public schools, courts, or hospitals) 

• Title III – Private businesses open to the public (like restaurants, clinics, or hotels) 

Step 2: Where to File Your Complaint 
You can file with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ): 

• Online: Go to ADA.gov 

• Or mail your complaint to:

If your complaint is about City of Los Angeles services, you can also contact:

Step 3: What to Include in Your Complaint 
Make sure to include: 

• Your name and contact info 

• Name and address of the organization 

• Date and what happened 

• Type of discrimination (for example, no interpreter) 

• Any proof—emails, photos, or documents 

Step 4: What Happens Next? 

• DOJ may investigate, mediate, or refer your complaint 

• They might contact you for more info 

• You could get a settlement or legal action 

• You’ll usually hear back in about 3 months 

Step 5: Tips for a Strong Complaint 

• Be clear and specific 

• Include names, dates, and places 

• Attach any evidence 

• You can also meet with a GLAD Community Advocate for help 

 You have the right to access. If you face discrimination, speak up. Filing a complaint helps protect your rights and supports our community.
