LS Advisory Board Member: Cindy Herbst – Secretary

Cindy Herbst, a Coda, started her career as an interpreter at San Fernando Valley State College (now CSUN), when she attended college there in 1970. She was an art major, and those were the beginning years of ASL services, classes, and interpreter training- initially through workshops. Eventually she landed at Pierce College where she started interpreting in 1976, and then teaching in the ASL/Interpreting Program in 1979, and retiring after 35+ years in 2014. Over the years she taught many interpreting workshops, traveling all over the U.S.

She interpreted for many, varied settings including: post-secondary, medical, religious, and platform, to name a few. She served on the board of SCRID, in various positions, off and on from 1979 until 2021.Cindy got her M.S. in Interpreter Education from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), graduating in 1991.

She worked several years for the DO-IT Center in Colorado, assisting and teaching for the Educational Interpreting Certificate Program, geared to rural interpreters needing training. In 2004 Cindy started working as a VRI for Sorenson, and worked part-time there until 2021.

Semi-retirement finds Cindy continuing to serve on the Advisory Board of LIFESIGNS-  currently as Secretary, interpreting a few hours per week- primarily doing remote interpreting, and crocheting a lot of afghans for family and friends!

Her favorite advice for interpreters is: clarify and verify!
